1928 Falcon-Knight Model 12 Sedan
NO TITLE-SOLD ON A BILL OF SALE ONLY
Falcon-Knight was a brand of automobile produced between 1927 and 1928 by the Willys-Overland Company of Toledo, Ohio. A separate company, the Falcon Motor Corporation was registered with headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. The cars were built in a former Garford Truck plant in Elyria, Ohio. The Falcon-Knight was intended to fit in between the Willys Whippet and larger Willys Knight ranges and was priced at 50, 0 less than the Willys Knight 70A Roadster. It was powered by a six cylinder Knight sleeve valve engine. Except for the engine, much of the car is actually the same as the Model 93A Whippet with many parts being interchangeable.
For consignment, a barn find version of the 1928 Falcon-Knight Model 12. Overall, in good condition with some rust spots, rust through on the roof, and an overall patina finish for the paint. The interior will need some attention, and the Knight sleeve valve engine is currently not running.
Exterior
Looking much like its sister production car the Whippet, this Falcon-Knight Model 12 Tourer offers up a nice sized car with the cowled hood, canvas topped, exterior fender and running board construction. Keeping it simple, a fairly utilitarian grille surround is flankled by a single large round headlight on either side, chromed turn signal lights at the back of the cowl, and a rear-view mirror hanging off the front windshield sunshade are the only chromed attachments to this car. All metal is bathed in dark green paint which is very well worn and showing a few areas of some rust beginning to invade it. Rounded fenders and a running board in the center are attached to either side. These fenders show some dents and dings as well as a few areas of corrosion into the paint which is black for these fenders. A solid running board attaches the two and looks to have been the most recent restoration completed on this car. 19-inch wooden spoked wheels are all around and a spare with no interior wheel is hanging off the back. The roof, which is covered in canvas, is beginning to come apart at the seams and in the back small holes have formed.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we are greeted with brown mohair covering the door panels. 2 simple patinaed levers are within this field. Moving inside 2 well worn broadcloth buckets are in front and a large bench in tuck and roll same broadcloth is stretching across the back. More mohair for the interior side pillars and side panels, as well as the headliner. Upfront a green metal dash with a resorted center panel emblazoned with Falcon Knight badges and a speckled painted panel for the instrument cluster. The instruments are in good condition within this panel, and outside on the green dash front are a few more knobs and a temp gauge. Floors are covered with wood which is showing some rotting through on the driver's side. A large black bakelite steering wheel is fronting this dash, and above we note an electric windshield wiper which clears a fold out front glass for some extra ventilation.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the infamous Knight sleeve valve engine in 198ci straight 6 form. A 1-barrel carburetor is feeding it fuel and air and on back is a 3-speed manual transmission. Note this engine does not crank or run.
Undercarriage
This Falcon Knight Model 12 utilized a ladder frame chassis equipped with all-round leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. The underside is in good condition with slight surface rust however no invasive rust is present. Running boards are lined with 2 wood planks between the body hangers and the upper floorboard (literally!).
A project car of the not often seen or heard of Falcon Knight from the Willys company. After some TLC on the mechanical end you could literally drive this car away and go and show, or take it further and restore the entire car. Either way you will be the only person in your neighborhood that will have an example of this 1928 and 1929 short run automobile.
